2nd Annual Playwriting Competition and Festival

The Competition has started!

Submission period - January 1 - March 15, 2018

Theatre Victoria announces its Second Annual Playwriting Competition and Festival.

Last year, seeking and encouraging new playwrights, we started our playwriting competition. The winner of the first competition, Four Old Broads by Leslie Kimbell, is due on stage in February 2018. We were amazed during our first competition at the amount of talent, the amount of comedic topics, and the amount of fun we would have in the audience selection of the winning play.

Once again, the winning play will be produced as part of Theatre Victoria’s regular season. The winning playwright will receive a stipend and performance royalties.

In addition to creating an opportunity for playwrights, the structure of this competition will provide a unique opportunity for area residents and theatre goers. Once the top three plays have been determined, the public will be invited to a staged reading of each play at Theatre Victoria’s Annual Playwriting Festival. After watching a one hour version of each play, audience members will vote to determine the winner. For the first time, local audience members will have a direct and immediate impact on a season play selection.

  • Plays must be unpublished and unproduced at time of submission. There must be no option or production contract in place for the submitted work at the time of submission. Theatre Victoria must be notified of any such agreements made subsequent to submission.
  • Plays must be full length comedies (No One Acts, Musicals, Children’s Shows or Adaptations)
  • Playwright must own all rights pertaining to the submission

  • Finalists must agree to a one hour cutting of the script for the purposes of a one day festival to determine the winner.  Playwrights will have full and final approval of said cutting.
  • Winning Play will be produced as part of Theatre Victoria’s Regular Season as the Resident Company of The Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts.
  • Winning Playwright will receive a $200.00 prize and royalties of $75.00 per performance.
